The Basic Principles of Homoeopathy

Eight ideas that hold the whole system together

Homoeopathy rests on a handful of core ideas, all laid out by its founder, Samuel Hahnemann, in his book Organon of Medicine. They're often taught as seven textbook principles, but there's a strong case for an eighth — individualization — without which the whole system doesn't really hold together in practice. Here's what each one means, in everyday terms.

1. The Law of Similars

The foundational idea of homoeopathy: a substance that can produce a particular set of symptoms in a healthy person can, in the right form, help someone with that same set of symptoms. This is a principle of homoeopathic practice, not an established scientific finding. This is the origin of the name itself — 'homoeo' (similar) and 'pathy' (suffering) — and of the Latin phrase homoeopaths still use to describe it, similia similibus curentur: let likes be cured by likes.

2. The Law of Minimum Dose

Hahnemann, disturbed by how much harm the aggressive medical treatments of his era caused, began experimenting with much smaller doses — and reported that lower doses caused fewer unwanted effects. This is the origin of the minimum-dose principle: use the smallest amount of remedy considered necessary, to keep unwanted effects to a minimum.

3. The Law of Simplex

Give one remedy at a time, not a mixture of several. Hahnemann's reasoning was practical: even when individual remedies have been thoroughly tested on their own, there's no reliable way to predict how several combined together might interact and alter each other's effects in the body.

4. Drug Proving

Before a remedy is used to treat anyone, its effects are first studied systematically by giving it to healthy volunteers and carefully recording what symptoms it produces. This process, called 'proving,' is how homoeopaths build reliable knowledge of what each remedy actually does — the foundation the Law of Similars depends on.

5. The Theory of Chronic Disease

Hahnemann noticed that even well-treated chronic conditions tended to relapse over time, in a way acute illnesses didn't. Over roughly twelve years of study, he concluded that chronic disease has deeper, recurring underlying causes — he called these 'miasms' — and named three: psora, sycosis and syphilis. This theory still shapes how homoeopaths think about long-term, recurring health problems today.

6. The Vital Force

Homoeopathy holds that health and illness both stem from an underlying life-force or vital energy that animates the body — separate from the physical body itself, but responsible for keeping all its functions in balance. Illness, in this view, is what happens when that vital force is disturbed, and the goal of treatment is to help restore its balance, not just to suppress physical symptoms.

7. Potentization

The process of preparing a remedy through repeated dilution and vigorous shaking (succussion). Hahnemann believed this process reduced the harmful effects of the raw substance while preserving its action. Highly diluted remedies are the most debated part of homoeopathic theory. (See our companion article, 'Understanding Potency in Homoeopathy,' for more detail.)

8. Individualization

The principle that ties everything else together: no two patients experience the 'same' disease in exactly the same way, so no two patients should automatically receive the same remedy. A thorough case history — symptoms, but also temperament, habits and general constitution — is what allows a homoeopath to match the right remedy to the right person, rather than the right remedy to a diagnosis on paper. Without this, the other seven principles are only half the picture.

These principles come from Hahnemann's Organon of Medicine, the founding text of homoeopathy, and remain the framework of classical homoeopathic practice. — Dr. Ahmed Ejaz, BHMS
